By morning the candles had burned down into metal cups and blackened the tray. Mina found the first smear of ash outside Room 3B, a thumbprint on the hallway paint where someone had steadied themselves and missed the banister.
She was not the superintendent, only the niece who came on Saturdays to sort bills and remind her uncle that coffee was not breakfast. Still, ash was evidence, and evidence had a way of becoming her problem.
The trail crossed the hall in three delicate marks. One on the sill beneath the open window. One on the knob of the red room. One on the envelope left under the radiator, creased once, empty except for the smell of smoke and orange peel.
No one answered when Mina knocked. Behind 3B, a man coughed as if he had been awake for hours. Downstairs, Mrs. Ibarra said she had heard no argument, only a woman laughing in the hall and then the window going up.
Mina fetched a saucer for the spent wicks. She did not clean the wall. Not yet. Some messes needed to be seen before they were forgiven.
